Client: Mexico Cultura y Orgulloso (MCO) / Tekiosk

Things to Know:

Help honor the incredible resilience of Socorro Ruiz, a single mother and community volunteer who has tirelessly supported her neighbors during crises like Oaxaca’s earthquakes and the pandemic. Through this campaign, MCO and Tekiosk aim to raise $30K by January 6 to build Socorro and her children a sustainable, dignified home. Net proceeds from all Tekiosk.com purchases and Gofundme donations will go towards directly funding the eco-friendly home, constructed using ancestral techniques that celebrate Oaxaca’s cultural heritage. Donors who donate $80 (USD) will receive a pair of beautifully handcrafted artisan shoes, symbolizing solidarity with Socorro’s journey and the campaign’s broader goals of sustainability and social equity. Together, we can make a lasting impact for a true local hero. Learn more at: https://www.tekiosk.com

This post is being shared as part of a Bloggin’ Mamas social good campaign. No monetary compensation was received for posting this helpful information below.

When it comes to this time of year, spending more hours indoors, you want to make sure your family room is well-organized and truly functional. But that doesn’t have to cost a lot of money to achieve. Here are some tips and tricks for creating a beautiful living room on a budget.

Declutter to Eliminate the Unnecessary Items – Sometimes our family rooms can suffer from too much clutter. It’s easy to see why since so many things happen in the living room from reading, to movies and games, as well as hobbies or even work projects. The problem comes when we collect unneeded items. Pack a box of things you haven’t used in the past month to donate to Goodwill – these items will go a long way towards increasing job training opportunities right in your community. http://www.goodwill.org/donate-and-shop/donate-stuff/

Make Your Shelves Standout – Add shelves to your living room, or make the shelves you have more functional by adding some standout storage like fabric boxes or baskets. Give each a theme and purpose so that you have like items being stored with like, but this way your shelves aren’t merely decorative, but highly functional as well.

Extra Space-Saving Seating – Accent chairs, poofs, or stools are a great way to create additional seating without overwhelming a small space. When you have oversized pieces in a small space, sometimes it can look crowded no matter how organized it is. Accent chairs like this piece from Goodwill can be more streamlined and easier to maneuver around.

Add Appropriate Storage – It’s hard to have too much storage in a well-used room. End tables, coffee tables with drawers, or any furniture piece with a place to store items you use often, will be put to good use in the family room!

Create an Entry Area – Don’t let a flat surface like the coffee table become the place that catches clutter. Put an end table or sofa table near the front door with a basket for loose change, a hook for keys, and a decorative platter for your wallet or other items that need to be seen by someone not yet home. By creating a dedicated area for this “pocket junk” you’ll catch that clutter into some suitable places BEFORE it has a chance to make it’s way onto a coffee table near you.

Giving back to the community is important year-round, but extra important over the holiday season. Goodwill maximizes every donation and every purchase, putting it to work within the community. By doing this holiday shopping at Goodwill, I am giving back and helping my community while I am also getting a great bargain.

Many of these tips can be implemented on a budget with a few simple items that are readily available at many Goodwill locations. Check your nearest Goodwills at the Goodwill store locator. http://www.goodwill.org/locator/ Then share what you found on the hashtag #ShopGoodwill!

We all care about animals but sometimes we don’t always think about the animals that help produce our food – especially during the holiday season. So, this season the ASPCA, Food Chain Workers Alliance, GRACE Communications Foundation, and the Natural Resource Defense Council are working hard to arm consumers with the information they need before they head to the grocery store for holiday shopping. And they are focusing on farm animal welfare by doing so.

Here are some tips for being a savvy consumer while supporting humane practices!

Don’t Be Duped – Marketing schemes can play a huge factor when it comes to food purchases. So often consumers want to buy humanely-raised food, but labels can be meaningless or downright misleading at times! What’s the difference between “all-natural” or “free-range” or “cage-free”? That’s why the ASPCA has produced guides like this one to help consumers distinguish what matters.

Don’t Waste the Food You Have – Your family can reduce your holiday grocery bill – and food waste – by serving the right portion sizes and storing leftovers properly. A Good Groceries Guide will help you understand how all these elements fit together to help people, animals, and ultimately the planet

Buy Locally – Shopping locally, like from your local farmer’s market or CSA, can keep your shopping dollars in your local area and also decrease the need for factory-farmed foods. Check out the ASPCA guide for shopping locally and how to begin conversations with local producers in your area.

Shop With Your Heart – At the ASPCA Shop With Your Heart website you’ll find an abundance of options for healthy and humane food choices, along with tips on how to begin to implement them in your own family.

Featuring all-star voice talent led by Elle Fanning (Maleficent), alongside Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars) and Maddie Ziegler (The Book of Henry), with Mel Brooks (Spaceballs), featuring Carly Rae Jepsen (singer-songwriter of the hit song “Call Me Maybe”) and Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”), Leap! is a colorful and imaginative story about an orphan girl who is determined to follow her dream of becoming a ballerina. Filled with irresistible original music, Leap! features the hit track “Cut to the Feeling.”

Eleven-year-old orphan Félicie (Fanning) has one dream — to go to Paris and become a dancer. Her best friend, Victor (Wolff), an imaginative, exuberant boy with a passion for creating, has a dream of his own — to become a famous inventor. In a leap of faith, Victor and Félicie leave their orphanage in pursuit of their passions. But there’s a catch: Félicie must pretend to be the child of a wealthy family in order to gain admittance to the prestigious and competitive Opera Ballet School in Paris. And with no professional dance training, she quickly learns that talent alone is not enough to overcome the ruthless, conniving attitudes of her fellow classmates, led by the devious Camille Le Haut (Ziegler). Determined to succeed, Félicie finds her mentor in the tough and mysterious school custodian, Odette (Jepsen), who, along with Victor’s encouraging friendship, help her reach for the stars.

Leap! will be available on Digital November 7 and on Blu-ray, DVD and On Demand November 21.

Did you know that every 33 seconds a child under 13 is involved in a car crash in the United States? That probably isn’t the first thing you think about when you are hauling your kids to school, the grocery store, or anywhere else around town. And really, you shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not your child is safely snuggled into the right car seat every time you get in the car. Instead, make sure your child is in the right seat from the get-go.

We here at Bloggin’ Mamas are passionate about ensuring child passengers are safe. We’ve held several events this year in different parts of the country to educate parents. Child Passenger Safety Week (September 17-23, 2017) is a great time to brush up on car seat safety tips and make sure your child is in the right seat, with the right fit and installation.

During Child Passenger Safety Week, more than 1000 events are expected in 45 states across the country to raise awareness for proper car seat installation and usage. The week culminates in “Seat Check Saturday,” where Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will help parents and caregivers make sure their car seats are installed correctly. In most cases, this service is FREE.

There are so many resources available to parents like NHTSA.gov/TheRightSeat, which has videos about how to install car seats and booster seats correctly and guides to picking the right seat by age and size.

Here’s a video that has been helpful for us:

The right car seat can make all the difference in a crash. Car seats, if used correctly, can dramatically reduce the risk of death or injury. But over half of car seats are either installed or used incorrectly, and 1 in 3 children killed in car crashes in 2015 was not in a car seat, booster seat, or seat belt at the time of the crash.

This is a donated post as part of a Bloggin’ Mamas Social Good campaign. All opinions expressed are our own.

We have been strong advocates for making sure your kids are properly restrained in your car, to keep them safe. This doesn’t include just making sure they are in a car seat or booster. This also means, making sure they have a seatbelt on and are sitting in the back seat.

Every 33 seconds a child under 13 is involved in a car crash in the United States. For younger children, car seats can dramatically reduce the risk of fatality or injury – but over half of car seats are either installed or used incorrectly. For older children, buckling up is critical. A full 50% of children age 8-14 who were killed in car crashes from 2011-2015 were not restrained.

That’s why we want parents and caregivers to know about the importance of making sure their child is safely restrained—whether that’s selecting the right car seat for their child’s age and size, or making sure that older kids (8-14) always buckle their seat belts and sit in the backseat.

As parents, we all want to do the right thing to keep our children safe and sound. This spring, the Ad Council and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are unveiling new PSAs to address these important issues. First, is the up to date car seat safety information like the tips found in the fun new video series “The Wide World of Car Seats.”

If you have ever installed a car seat, you know that it is not an easy task to master. Wouldn’t it be cool if we were cheered on for our parenting wins, like how we cheer on our own kids in sports?

The right car seat can make all the difference in a motor vehicle crash. And car crashes are a leading cause of death for children 1 to 13 years old. But despite their best intentions, many parents may not realize their child isn’t in the right seat. For example, many parents move their children to the next restraint type (car seat, booster seat, seat belt) too soon. To make sure you have the right seat for your child, visit SaferCar.gov/TheRightSeat.

And just when you think you’ve got this parenting thing down, your child becomes a “tween” and you enter a whole new world. To help with travel safety, the Ad Council and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) are unveiling new PSAs featuring characters from Fox’s upcoming summer road trip adventure Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul. The PSAs remind parents and caregivers that even if kids argue and plead, parents should stand firm and always insist that their kids buckle up and sit in the back seat (the safest place for kids under the age of 13).

Do your kids like the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series as much as mine? Now you can even watch PSAs with them featuring their favorite characters, showing them the importance of buckling up and sitting in the back seat.

Per data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 69,000 tweens are injured every year in car crashes and 61% of 14-year-old children killed in 2015 car crashes were unrestrained at the time of the crash. Even though life as a parent is full of compromises, seat belt safety should never be up for negotiation. That’s why the new PSAs encourage us to: “Never give up until they buckle up!”

For more information or if you need more tips to convince your tween to buckle up, visit SaferCar.gov/KidsBuckleUp. If you have a great tip, join the conversation on social media using: #KidsBuckleUp.

Since April is World Autism Month, we’ve decided to #LightItUpBlue with Autism Speaks to increase understanding and awareness of autism. Autism personally touches our family and team, and we have worked with several clients offering beneficial options and programs to assist children with autism and their families. It’s highly likely that you know someone with autism too since the CDC estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in every 68 children in the United States.

Autism refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as by unique strengths and differences. We now know that there is not one autism but many types, caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences.

Autism’s most obvious signs tend to appear between 2 and 3 years of age. In some cases, it can be diagnosed as early as 18 months. Autism Speaks encourages parents with concerns to seek evaluation without delay, as early intervention can improve outcomes.

The “Light It Up Blue” campaign is about more than awareness — it is about increasing understanding and acceptance of autism. This includes advocacy and support for people across the entire spectrum throughout their lives. It also includes advancing research into personalized treatments for autism and related conditions. I encourage you test your understanding of autism by taking this quiz!

Certain medical and mental health issues frequently accompany autism. They include GI disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and phobias.

You can help make a difference too by taking the Light It Up Blue Quiz to see how much you know about autism. If you’re moved to do so after visiting AutismSpeaks.org, please show your support for and understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with autism by sharing a photo to #LightItUpBlue for Autism Awareness Month too. Also, check out Autism Speaks’ nationwide calendar of autism-friendly friendly events and activities in April.

(This year, we are going to #crushit at building our local chapters up, so stay tuned and let us know if you want to be involved!)

The POP of Positivity Tour is free and open to the public and is currently taking place in five U.S. cities and online through the Angie’s BOOMCHICKAPOP social channels. So far, they’ve toured Minneapolis, Miami and NYC. They are in Raleigh through the 19th. Next, they will be in Atlanta March 24th through the 26th.

In each city, women, children and men of all ages are invited to step inside a life-sized bag of Angie’s BOOMCHICKAPOP and video record what they want to “crush” for themselves and their communities, sharing that commitment in real time using the #crushit hashtag on social media. They will be sharing out many of the recorded videos throughout the year on their social channels.
